The following are some photos of the Lucia Massei opening (titled, Unforgettable) at the Antonella Villanova contemporary jewelry gallery here in Florence, a golden nugget of a space that I came across accidentally (thank goodness!). I had no idea this place even existed; I stood outside the door for about 10 minutes upon walking by for the first time in utter disbelief that indeed, it was real, before I was able to walk in and discover that it Ms. Villanova knew what she was doing. Their collection boasts works I have only seen in books; Peter Bauhuis, Ruudt Peters… and of course works by Italian bigwigs like Renzo Pasquale. The gallery is adjacent to her husbands contemporary art gallery, Alessandro Bagnai, which is quite interesting. How do the galleries relate to one another, and why not be one in the same? Nothing like that yet exists in my opinion, yet maybe we are getting close.
When the show comes down show closes (Feb. 20) I plan to interview the gallerist and take some better photos of their permanent collection. The gallery is not exclusive to jewelry artists; there are also design objects and furniture by Eames, Gio Ponti and Betty Woodman to name a few.
Luccia Massei lives and works in Florence, Italy, co-founder and teacher at Alchimia, scuola di gioielleria contemporania e design.
